Mon Chéri [ ˈmõˑʃeˌʀi ] (French: 'My darling') is a praline filled with brandy from the Italian manufacturer Ferrero . The product is sold almost worldwide. The outer shell is made of dark chocolate. This is filled with liqueur (about 0.66 g) and an alleged "Piedmont cherry". Every year around 130 million kilograms are consumed worldwide.

In the USA , Ferrero used to sell a product with a different content under the same name. There Mon Chéri contained milk chocolate and a roasted hazelnut (similar to the “ Ferrero kisses ” known in Germany and Austria ).

history

Mon Chéri has existed since the 1950s, in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1957. In the first year after the market launch, 9,000 kilograms were produced daily, in the second year it was 20,000 kilograms. In the early years, the praline was sold individually. In the 1980s, Mon Chéri was promoted by the actors Paul Hubschmid , Thomas Fritsch and Nadja Tiller as well as the singer Gitte Hænning . Iris Berben , Ralf Bauer , Howard Carpendale and Katharina Witt were later well-known advertising media for the brand.

ingredients

Mon Chéri contains semi-dark chocolate (48.5%), cherries (18%), liqueur (13%) and cocoa butter . Because of the alcohol content , it is unsuitable for alcoholics and it is prohibited to give it to children and young people under the age of 18 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. As one of the few types of praline, Mon Chéri consists of dark chocolate that contains no or only traces of milk , so it is vegan , lactose-free and therefore also compatible with lactose-intolerant people.

Piedmont cherry

The word Piedmont Cherry is a registered trade mark register brand . " Piedmont " is based on the region of origin of the Ferrero family.

A cherry variety with this name does not exist. Despite the name “Piedmont”, the cherry does not come from Italy , but is bought where Ferrero gets the best conditions. So far, three places of origin have become known: Poland , Chile and Ortenau in Germany. The cherries from Chile are harvested earlier than others because of the long transport route, as they have to be firmer for processing. Some of the cherries used in German production come from Ortenau (as of 2008).

The television broadcaster WDR was able to find out "that a large part of the cherries come from Eastern Europe, especially from Poland". According to Ferrero, for the consumer the term Piedmont cherry is associated with a quality concept "that is not necessarily connected with Piedmont".

The standard pack weighs 157 grams, the gift pack 262 grams. Mixtures with other Ferrero products are also offered. The chocolates are usually packed individually in addition to the outer packaging. The bulk packs contain both packaged and unpackaged chocolates.

A business editor at SWR doubts this . a. to the well-known fact that other chocolate manufacturers sell their products all year round. For a while, a fictional Claudia Bertani promoted the Piedmont cherry as a “quality tester” after the summer break.

In 2016, Mon Chéri Sweet Cherry was introduced as a new variety; According to the manufacturer, it was sweeter and fruity.
