Montin , also known as arruva , is a natural sweetener . It can be isolated from the root bark of Sclerochiton ilicifolius , a plant found in the Transvaal . This plant cannot be cultivated.

The name "monton "is derived from the indigenous word for the substance" molomo months "(=" pretty mouth "). The substance is used as a popular sweetener .

The decomposition of the substance with an indole structure leads to a pronounced fecal odor due to the formation of skatole .

The sweetness is around 1300-3000.

The company Cargill has about 50 of the more than 200 existing patents related to monatin.
