In space travel , the moon rover is a mobile robot that can automatically or remotely record and examine the surface of the moon. But the (manually controlled) "moon car" of the Apollo astronauts in 1971/72 was also called the Rover .

The first moon rovers were the two vehicles used by the Soviet Union , Lunochod 1 and 2, which were in use in 1970/71 and 1973. The eight-wheeled vehicles were designed for three months, but worked for eleven and four months respectively. They transmitted numerous panoramic images and thousands of television images, examined lunar rocks and individual geological formations and fault lines .

The United States previously set no remote-controlled lunar robot one, but those for manned space flight . The Lunar Roving Vehicle , designed for two astronauts , was used in 1971 and 1972 on Apollo missions 15 , 16 and 17 to increase the radius of action and safety of the lunar pilots and their equipment.

The People's Republic of China brought the rover Jade Hare on board the space probe Chang'e-3 to the moon in 2013 , and in 2019 with Chang'e-4 a second rover, the Jade Hare 2 , to the moon's rear .
