Moonlight Sonata (Original title: Moonlight Sonata , US-American title: The Charmer ) is a British film drama directed by Lothar Mendes from 1937.

action

In this romantic tale, Paderewski , the famous pianist, and two other aircraft crash survivors are guests of the Swedish Baroness Lindenborg. Embedded in this tender and charming story is the exquisite performance of Chopin's polonaise , Paderewski's own minuet in G major and Beethoven's moonlight sonata on the piano, superbly interpreted by the main actor Ignacy Jan Paderewski.

production

In the 1930s, the British production company Pall Mall Productions wanted to bring the world-wide popular Polish pianist and composer Ignacy Jan Paderewski and his maximum level of piano virtuosity to the big screen and thus capture it for posterity. In 1937, two years after the death of his second wife, Paderewski took on the lead role in the film, and the film was produced.

Reviews

Moonlight Sonata is a strange film. What film would start with a 15-minute piano concerto these days and include two more? The plot of was criticized as "very conventional", as extremely accustomed for an audience that grew up with film and television, and as a collection of "gadgets". It only serves as a "background" for Paderewski's piano solos and is just a distraction. These piano solos are "excellent" and would delight music lovers. In general, Paderewski makes the film very charming. But also the dedication of the director and cast, which is particularly evident in the musical sections, add value to Moonlight Sonata .
