Mongomo is a city in eastern Equatorial Guinea . It is the capital of the Wele-Nzas province and is located directly on the border with Gabon at 630  m . The city, including the surrounding area, has around 53,510 inhabitants (as of 2012), several thousand of whom are foreign workers from a Chinese company.

The current President of Equatorial Guinea Teodoro Obiang comes from the Mongomo area and grew up there. The country's first president, Francisco Macías Nguema , a relative of the current president, was mayor of Mongomo even before it gained independence from Spain.

In 2011, the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception was built here as the second largest church in Africa, which has been the seat of the Mongomo diocese since 2017 .

Mongomo was one of the four venues for the 2015 African Cup of Nations .
