Monika Frenzel (born April 23, 1950 in Kitzbühel ) is an Austrian art historian , author and curator of historical exhibitions.

Life

education

Born in Kitzbühel, Monika Frenzel attended elementary school there, followed by further training in Salzburg with high school diploma. She studied art history and medieval history at the University of Innsbruck and received her doctorate in 1978 under Otto von Lutterotti on the subject of "Historical gardens and garden pavilions in Tyrol".

Professional background

From 1972 to 1992 Monika Frenzel worked in Ambras Castle in Innsbruck with the development and support of exhibition concepts. As a qualified Austria Guide, she founded the cultural association “per pedes” in Innsbruck in 1993 together with a group of committed tourist guides, of which she is still chairman today. She teaches Tyrolean art history at the Economic Development Institute (WiFi) in Innsbruck. She also works as a curator of exhibitions, as an author of books, newspapers, magazines and catalogs, and as an organizer of historical events.

Journalistic activity

Frenzel's main topics in lectures as well as in articles, in newspapers, magazines, exhibition catalogs and festival publications are historical gardens, Tyrolean art history, the Habsburgs, modern architecture and tourism in Tyrol. The dissertation on "Historical gardens and garden pavilions in Tyrol" was Monika Frenzel's first scientific publication, which was followed by numerous publications on historical topics. Among other things, 1986 about art monuments of the city of Innsbruck, 1993 about forgotten total works of art in the historical gardens of Austria, 1998 her main work about "Garden art in Tyrol - from the Renaissance to today". In 2003 Frenzel wrote a text on "Cenotaph of Emperor Maximilians I in the Hofkirche in Innsbruck". In addition, she published exhibition catalogs for the exhibitions she curated and co-curated. In 2004 she created the catalog for the exhibition "Emma Hellenstainer - A Life for the Guest" in Trauttmannsdorff Castle.

Exhibitions

The first exhibition curated by Monika Frenzel took place in 1997 in the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum in Innsbruck. The theme was "Earthly paradises - historical garden architecture in Tyrol". In the run-up to the exhibition, she was involved in the planning and construction of the Keuchengarten, a garden element from the Renaissance period, in Ambras Castle. Today the garden is an essential part of the gardens and parks of Ambras Castle. In 2008 she organized the parade in Trento in memory of Maximilian I's coronation as emperor with 300 extras. In 2005 she curated the exhibition “Maximilian I - Triumph of an Emperor” in the Innsbruck Hofburg . In 2017 Monika Frenzel was commissioned to develop and curate the 2019 Maximilian exhibition “Maximilian I - Departure into Modern Times” in the Hofburg Innsbruck. She is responsible for the continuation of this exhibition as a permanent exhibition with different thematic focuses. She publishes in various newspapers and magazines about Maximilian I and his time, among other things.
