i2030

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The i2030 project is a joint project of the states of Berlin and Brandenburg and the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg with DB Netze and Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn AG to improve the rail infrastructure in the region around Berlin.

Aim and purpose

The states of Berlin and Brandenburg are planning the rail infrastructure for the metropolitan region of Berlin / Brandenburg with DB Netze, NEB AG and VBB in the i2030 project . The aim is to provide a suitable infrastructure for a growing supply of trains . The corresponding framework agreement with DB Netze was signed in October 2017 by the Berlin Senator for Transport Regine Günther , the Brandenburg Transport Minister Kathrin Schneider and DB Board member Ronald Pofalla . A planning agreement for the Heidekrautbahn was signed in January 2019 by the same ministers and NEB AG board member Detlef Bröcker. In April 2020, the financing agreement of around 16 million euros followed for the preliminary, draft and approval planning for the S-Bahn extension to Rangsdorf.

Funding in accordance with the Municipal Transport Financing Act is sought to finance the i2030 measures .

The aim is to create faster connections, more punctual trains and more space on the railways.

Sub-projects

In the i2030 project, eight sub-projects were defined in the rail network of the capital region, in which there is a need for expansion and new construction:

With the exception of the Heidekrautbahn, for which Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn AG is responsible as the railway infrastructure company, the sub-projects are part of the DB Netze network.

West: Berlin-Spandau - Nauen

In the Berlin-Spandau - Falkensee corridor, both regional and S-Bahn traffic is planned. The Berlin-Spandau train station has to be expanded due to capacity bottlenecks and a foreseeable increase in long-distance traffic; an additional platform is Template: future / in 5 yearsplanned to be built on the south side by 2035 . By adapting the track occupancy plan, a more dense regional train cycle should be realized earlier if possible. On the west side of the station, another crossing structure is being examined in order to be able to introduce the Hamburg and Lehrter Bahn traffic without hindrance. For the S-Bahn, both an extension to Finkenkrug and a branch into Falkenhagener Feld are being investigated.

North-West: Prignitzexpress / Velten

The section Velten - Neuruppin is to be expanded to two-track sections for a 30-minute cycle of the Prignitz-Express. The S-Bahn line between Berlin-Schönholz and Berlin-Tegel is also to be double-tracked and a new Berlin-Borsigwalde stop is to be built. In order to connect the Prignitz-Express directly to Berlin-Gesundbrunnen, the aim is to build a separate long-distance railway track.

The extension of the S-Bahn from Hennigsdorf to Velten is also being investigated.

North: Nordbahn / Heidekrautbahn

The main route of the Heidekrautbahn between Berlin-Wilhelmsruh and Basdorf is to be reactivated. In a second step, the trains will be connected along the Berlin Northern Railway to Berlin-Gesundbrunnen, the corresponding section of which will have to be rebuilt for this purpose. Furthermore, the reconstruction of the Birkenwerder station is planned in order to build a separate platform (independent of the S-Bahn) for regional traffic.

South-East: Berlin - Cottbus / Königs Wusterhausen train station

The Lübbenau - Cottbus section is to be expanded to two tracks. Building permission has been applied for for this purpose, and a planning approval decision is expected by 2023. Conflicts between the S-Bahn and long-distance trains as a result of track crossings are to be minimized by converting the north end of the Königs Wusterhausen train station; the planning approval decision for this is to be Template: future / in 2 yearsavailable in 2022 . Several variants are being examined for the subsequent complete renovation of the station.

South: Berlin - Dresden / Rangsdorf

An extension of the S-Bahn from Blankenfelde to Rangsdorf is planned, with an additional station at the industrial area south of Dahlewitz.

South-West: Potsdam main line

The reconstruction of the Potsdam main line is being examined both as a S-Bahn and regional transport route. Stahnsdorf is also to be connected by an extension of the S25 from Teltow Stadt.

West-East: RE1 Magdeburg - Berlin - Eisenhüttenstadt

The platforms on the RE1 line in Brandenburg will be extended and converted to a platform height of 76 cm. Implementation is planned for the mid-2020s.

S-Bahn Berlin : Selection from around 40 individual projects

Various individual measures are aimed at increasing the efficiency and stability of the Berlin S-Bahn network.

The construction of additional parking facilities and the installation of a switch connection at the Berlin Hauptbahnhof S-Bahn station are planned by the mid-2020s.

Siemensbahn : Jungfernheide - Gartenfeld

The restart of the Siemensbahn was subsequently taken up as an i2030 project.

Background and criticism

According to the project partners, more and more people live and work in Berlin and neighboring Brandenburg, want to be mobile and use the train to do so . The offer in Berlin and Brandenburg must keep pace with the increasing population and develop further. Since the capacities for the future are insufficient, investments will be made in many places in Berlin and Brandenburg in improving the infrastructure in the coming years. In the i2030 project, several sub-projects in the rail network of the capital region were defined in which there is a need for expansion and new construction.

It has been criticized on various occasions that infrastructure projects are still being implemented very slowly and hesitantly despite the joint i2030 project, for example with the S-Bahn to Velten or the Potsdam main line.
