Monika Schmutz Kirgöz

Monika Schmutz Kirgöz , previously Monika Schmutz Cattaneo (* 1968 in Basel ) is a Swiss diplomat . She is Switzerland's acting ambassador to Lebanon .

Life

After graduating from the Muttenz high school , she studied political science at the University of Lausanne and did a doctorate in development economics at the NADEL Center for Development and Cooperation at ETH Zurich . This postgraduate course was combined with a one-year work stay in Malang (Indonesia).

From 1994 to 1996 she was the information officer of the Max Havelaar Foundation (Switzerland) , which at that time was based in Basel. On May 1, 1996, she entered the service of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and was employed during her training in Berne (function: press officer of the FDFA), Ankara (2000–2004) and Rome.

From September 2007 she was the first employee (deputy) of the head of mission of the Swiss embassy in Tel-Aviv (Israel). From September 2011 she succeeded Consul General Ernst Balzli in Istanbul (Turkey). During this time, against the background of the threat to Kurdish women from honor killings , she initiated the first women's refuge in Diyarbakir .

Since August 2017 she has been the successor of François Barras Ambassador of Switzerland to Lebanon, with her office and residence in Beirut . The Swiss embassy was badly damaged and the ambassador was slightly injured by the blast from the explosion in the port of Beirut in August 2020.

Monika Schmutz's first husband was a journalist working in Ticino, and her second marriage is to the Turkish economist Yıldırım Kırgöz. She has two sons.
