Monkey is a synth pop song by George Michael that was released on his album Faith in 1987 and released as a single in July 1988 . It became a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and in Canada . The song was co-produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis , making it the first number one hit that George Michael did not produce alone.
Emergence
The producer duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis had produced a remix album for Janet Jackson , which was released in Great Britain under the title More Control . It had a version of Nasty on it that Michael really liked. In his opinion they had added chords to the version without neglecting the funky elements. Michael asked the two of them if they would remix Monkey the same way and provided them with a demo of the title. However, Jam and Lewis decided to completely re-record the song. They recorded the base tracks in their Minneapolis studio and then went to Los Angeles , where Michael was supposed to record the vocals. Because Michael was in the middle of rehearsals for the upcoming tour , he commuted between the rehearsal room and the studio, which is why recording the vocals took about a week. After the vocals were rerecorded, the producers combined them with samples from the demo version's vocals. Back in their Minneapolis studio, they didn't like the sound of the drums anymore, the result should sound like a live recording. So Jam replayed drum tracks and Vaughn Halyard, a Synclavier programmer, made corrections on the drum machine . This gave the result a kind of live atmosphere that went well with the planned music video .
