Monnette Sudler

Monnette Sudler Leigh (* 5. June 1952 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania as Monnette Goldman ) is an American Jazzgitarristin (also vocals, composition).

Live and act

Sudler, who comes from a musical family, initially received piano lessons. At the age of 15 she switched to the guitar and first received lessons from her father, Truman W. Sudler, then developed into folk music before switching to jazz. After studying composition and arrangement at Combs College of Music , she graduated from Berklee School of Music in 1970 and 1971 ; at that time she became a professional musician. She next starred in the Sounds of Liberation of Khan Jamal , later with Sunny Murray Untouchable Factor . After she had performed with the big band of Sam Rivers at the Newport Jazz Festival , she was able to record her debut album Brighter Days for You in 1977 ; the following year she toured Europe with her own band. She also belonged to Philly Joe Jones ' project Dameronia (which was reminiscent of the music of Tadd Dameron ) and to the Change of the Century Orchestra , with which she performed at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1987 . She has worked with musicians such as Grover Washington Jr. , Steve Turré , Reggie Workman , Cecil McBee and Hamiet Bluiett . In addition to jazz with her quartet or quintet, she also plays blues with her Monnette Sudler Blues Express . In 2003 she completed further training at Temple University .

In the early 2010s, respiratory failure forced her to severely limit her concert activities.

Prizes and awards

Sudler received the David P. Richardson Achievement Award and the Shirley Chisom Award from the National Political Congress of Black Women .
