The Monocacy River is a 93.3 km long river in the US states of Maryland and Pennsylvania and the largest tributary of the Potomac River in Maryland.
The Monocacy has its source in Adams County and flows into the Potomac River between Tuscarora and Dickerson . The river drains an area of 1927 km². Largest town on the bank is Frederick . The name Monocacy comes from the Shawnee and means "river with many loops". The river crosses the Monocacy National Battlefield . The Battle of the Monocacy took place there in 1864 during the civil war .
