Monopenchelys acuta is a species of moray eel . It is the only member of the monotypical genus Monopenchelys . The fish is adapted to life in salt water.
description
Monopenchelys acuta is a small moray eel that can grow up to 8 inches long. It's slim, worm-like, and a little compressive. The head is elongated and usually wider than the body. The color is uniformly light brown, the head and tip of the tail are reddish, which has led to the English vernacular names Redface eel ( USA ) and Redface moray ( United Kingdom and Bahamas ), which means “red-faced moray”.
distribution
So far the species has been sighted in the southeast Atlantic off Ascension , in the western Atlantic from the Bahamas to the Caribbean , in the Pacific off Hawaii and in the western Indian Ocean . It lives under stones at a depth of 13 to 54 m.
Systematics
The moray eel was originally described by Albert Eide Parr as Uropterygius acuta and later placed in the genus Rabula . In 1982 Eugenia B. Böhlke and John E. McCosker established the new genus Monopenchelys for the fish , because some characteristics differ from those of other moray eel genera. For example, the dorsal fin begins well behind the anus on the abdomen . Monopenchelys belongs to the subfamily of the Muraeninae, although the two recently discovered bones in the chest area of many moray eel species are absent as in almost all members of the subfamily Uropterygiinae.
