The Mont Oave is both the highest mountain on the island of Ua Pou and the highest point of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia . The needle-shaped basalt elevation, characteristic of many Marquesas, is located in the center of the island and reaches a height of 1232 m above sea level. The mountain is of volcanic origin and belongs to the "Marquesas linear volcanic chain", which was formed from a hotspot on the Pacific plate and moves at a speed of 103 to 118 mm per year in the west-northwest direction.
