Alder Montaigue

Erle Montaigue (* 1949 ; † January 26, 2011 ) is an internationally known teacher of the Chinese internal martial arts Taijiquan and Baguazhang as well as Qigong .

Career

Montaigue was born in a small mining village about 50 miles south of Sydney. Before becoming a Taijiquan teacher, Alder trained wrestling and was also a reasonably successful musician.

Montaigue had his first contact with the internal martial arts in 1968 when he found his first Taijiquan teacher, Wong Eog. In 1973 he became one of the first students of Chu King-Hung in London , from whom he learned the newer Yang style of Taijiquan after Yang Chengfu . Later he became a student of Chiang Yiu-Chun, who was a master student of Yang Shaohou , and from whom Montaigue learned the original, "older" Yang style, which was otherwise only passed on in secret.

In 1981 Montaigue traveled to Hong Kong, where Yang Zhenming corrected his form . He then became the first non-Chinese to teach Taijiquan to the Chinese. In May 1985, Montaigue was the first non-Chinese to take part in the All China National Wushu Tournament and present his Taijiquan.

In 2000 Montaigue moved from Australia to Wales , where he lived until his unexpected death on January 26, 2011.

Activity and publications

Montaigue has taught Taijiquan, Baguazhang and Qigong all over the world.

His articles have been published in many martial arts magazines. Erle has published more than 20 books and over 330 DVDs on Taijiquan, Baguazhang and Qigong. Montaigue was editor of Combat and Healing magazine , which is published worldwide.

Montaigue was vice chairman of the Federation of Australian Wushu and Kung Fu Organization and the course coordinator for Taijiquan and Baguazhang of the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme for Kung Fu . Montaigue was also president of the Australian Therapeutic Movement Association and chairman of the World Taiji Boxing Association . The latter organization includes Taiji schools in 23 countries, the teachers of which have been trained by Montaigue.
