Yang Chengfu or Yang Cheng-Fu ( Chinese  楊澄甫  /  杨澄甫 , Pinyin Yáng Chéngfǔ , W.-G. Yang Ch'eng-fu ; * 1883 ; † March 3, 1936 ) is considered the best-known representative of the so-called " soft / inner " Martial art of the Yang style in Taijiquan ( 太極拳  /  太极拳 , tàijíquán , IPA ( standard Chinese) [ tʰâid̥ʑ̥ǐtɕʰɥɛ̌n ], t'ai chi ch'üan ).

biography

Yang Chengfu was born in 1883 as the son of Yang Jianhou ( 楊健 侯  /  杨健 侯 , Yang Chien-Hou ; * 1839 ; † 1917 ) and grandson of Yang Luchan ( 楊 露 禪  /  杨 露 禅 ; * 1799 ; † 1872 ), the founder of the Yang style . He was trained by his father, but especially by his older brother, Yang Shaohou , ( 楊少 侯  /  杨少 侯 ; * 1862 , † 1930 ). Until his day, Taijiquan was mainly passed on within the family and at the imperial court, whose bodyguard was tutored by Yang Luchan and later his eldest son Yang Banhou ( 楊 班 侯  /  杨 班 侯 ; * 1837 ; † 1890 ). Together with Yang Shaohou and his classmates Wu Jianquan ( 吳 鑑 泉  /  吴 鉴 泉 ) and Sun Lutang ( 孫 錄 堂  /  孙 录 堂 ), Yang Chengfu was one of the first from 1914 to teach a large number of outsiders at the Beijing Research Institute for Physical Culture before he went to Shanghai in 1928 . He died on March 3, 1936 .

Act

Opinions are controversial about his work:

Some claim that Yang Chengfu fundamentally changed his family's fighting style and could be considered the creator of what is now known as the Yang style and which shaped Taijiquan as a whole in public perception. He also eliminated a number of explosive movements and all jumps from the traditional long form, as well as the low stance that z. B. Chen-style Taijiquan characterizes to this day. And that he formed an emphatically “large frame” (Dàjià, 大 架 ), which is characterized by long steps and sweeping movements and is completed at a steady, calm pace.

Images of Yang Chengfu's traditional long form

Others are of the opinion that Yang Cheng Fu only made a selection from a very rich training tradition of the Yang family, the curriculum of which included several forms and different types of execution, i.e. different heights (crane, tiger, snake) as well as different sizes Frame.

Pupil and successor

The importance that Yang Chengfu achieved for Taijiquan well beyond his own lifespan is due in large part to his children, master students and their successors, who spread the art around the globe in a relatively short time.

Sons

  • Yang Chengfu's eldest son Yang Shou-chung (* 1910 ; † 1985 ) ( 楊守 中  /  杨守 中 , Yang Shaozhong , Yang Shou-chung ), also: Yang Zhenming ( 楊振銘  /  杨振铭 , Yang Zhenming ), brought up the Yang style Taijiquan Hong Kong.
  • The official head of the Yang family is the third son of Yang Chengfu, Yang Zhenduo ( 楊振 鐸  /  杨振 铎 ; * 1926 ), at home in the Chinese province of Shanxi . As the youngest master, his grandson Yang Jun ( 楊君  /  杨君 ; * 1968 ) now represents the 6th generation of the Yang family.

Master student

According to Yang Shou Chung, although his father had many students, he only had five official master classes, including:

Other students

Perhaps his most famous student was Zheng Manqing ( 鄭曼青  /  郑曼青 , Cheng Man-ch'ing ; * around 1900 ; † 1975 ), who brought Taijiquan to America in 1964 and shortened the traditional long form from 108 to 37 movements to make it a larger one To make available number of interested parties.
