The Monte Argentera , often abbreviated as the Argentera , is the highest mountain in the Maritime Alps at 3,297 m . It is located in the Piedmontese Stura Valley ( province of Cuneo ), a few kilometers north of the border with France.
The first ascent took place on August 18, 1879 by William Auguste Coolidge and his mountain guides Christian Almer and Ulrich Almer. They used a snow channel for their ascent, the Couloir di Lourousa .
