Chikamatsu Monzaemon
Chikamatsu Monzaemon ( Japanese 近 松 門 左衛 門 , originally: Sugimori Nobumori ; * 1653 ; † January 6, 1725 in Osaka ) was a Japanese playwright . He wrote over 150 pieces, including works for kabuki , the traditional Japanese bourgeois theater and for the puppet play Jōruri . His most famous piece was the melodrama Kokusenya-kassen (in German: The fight of Kokusenya ), which was premiered in 1715.
Chikamatsu was the son of a samurai. He was the first writer to write pieces for the puppet theater that required more than mere mechanical skills from the puppeteer. His works are considered to be the first literary works for puppet theater in Japan. In general, he is still regarded as one of the most important playwrights in his country.
The composer Mayako Kubo wrote an opera based on his play Osan - The Secret of Love (2004).
