Moody's origins go back to the 19th century. The boat builder John Moody founded a shipyard in Swanwick ( Hampshire , South East England) on the banks of the Hamble in 1827 , which mainly dealt with the repair and overhaul of fishing boats. When John Moody died in 1880, he left the business to his son Alexander, who soon also built small dinghies .

In 1935, the Moody shipyard in Swanwick produced the first larger sailing yachts in wooden construction. The first model, the Vindilis , was designed by T. Harrison-Butler. The service operation was continued parallel to the boat building. Gradually the factory premises were expanded so that Moody could also build larger yachts. In addition to the shipyard operations, the Moody family, which is still in charge, had a marina built.

Plastic sailing yachts (1965-2004)

From 1965 Moody brought GRP sailing yachts onto the market, which were soon valued by cruising sailors for their suitability for long journeys and their comfort. With designs from yacht designers such as Laurent Giles , Angus Primrose and Bill Dixon, the company developed into a leading European yacht manufacturer.

The 1973 oil crisis and the subsequent slump in the motorboat market led John Moody to team up with David King of Marine Projects (Plymouth) Ltd , the manufacturer of Princess motor yachts. King had a worldwide dealer network, Moody the suitable production halls. The collaboration between the two entrepreneurs was very successful. They produced up to 400 sailing yachts from 27 to 64 feet in length each year . Bill Dixon and Angus Primrose were responsible for the design of all models. Due to falling sales in sailing yacht construction, the companies broke the connection again in 2003. In their 30-year cooperation, they had developed 39 models and sold 4,233 boats. When looking for new production halls , Moody found a suitable partner in VT Halmatic Ltd. A new range of models has been developed, consisting of the Moody 49 , Moody 56 and Moody 66 models .

Shutdown, sale of the brand, restart (2005-today)

In 2005, the seventh generation of the founding family sold the company to Premier Marinas Ltd , Swanwick. A year later the production was stopped. In 2007, the German HanseYachts AG acquired the trademark rights and has been producing Moody sailing yachts with a length of 41 to 54 feet at the Greifswald location since then .

Model series

Before HanseYachts AG took over the brand , Moody was known for its comfortable mid-cockpit yachts. From 2007 onwards, Bill Dixon developed two further comfort-oriented model series with a significantly different concept:

  • the AC series (also: Classic) with aft cockpit and classic yacht lines above the waterline (retro design)
  • the DS series with aft cockpit, deck saloon and high bulwark
