history

Foundation and advancement (1990–2007)

Location in Greifswald
Location in Greifswald

The direct forerunner of today's HanseYachts shipyard is the Greifswald boat and repair shipyard , which in turn had its origins in the Buchholz shipyard , the last large shipyard in Greifswald for wooden ships. HanseYachts AG was founded in 1990 by Michael Schmidt, the winner of the Admiral's Cup in 1985. Until 2006, the company was called Yachtzentrum Greifswald . Production and sales began in 1993 with the Hanse 291 , the design of which was based on the Aphrodite 291 and the ideas of the designers Carl Baier and Bent Elgaard. The Hanse 331, developed from the Finngulf 33 , followed later .

In terms of the number of boats sold, the company became one of the world's three largest manufacturers of ocean-going sailing yachts . In 2006, the company delivered over 700 boats for the first time from its main plant located directly on the Ryck . In the course of the 2007/2008 financial year, HanseYachts AG once again significantly expanded its production capacities in Greifswald and at the Polish location in Goleniów (shell production). These and previous investments were partly funded by EU funds.

Acquisitions and the crisis (2007-2010)

The product range has included motor yachts from the Norwegian brand Fjord since 2007 . 2008 HanseYachts AG expanded its product portfolio with Decksalon- and aft cockpit yachts under the 2007 acquired British heritage brand Moody sold. The company was also listed on the stock exchange in 2007. In March 2008 HanseYachts AG announced that the forecasts made for the IPO could not be met due to various organizational problems and the high competitive pressure. In 2009 HanseYachts AG bought the insolvent Dehler shipyard .

Takeover and further development (2011 – today)

In July 2011, the Munich-based investment holding Aurelius took over the majority stake in HanseYachts AG, while company founder Michael Schmidt left the company. At the end of 2012, the Dehler location in Freienohl was closed and Dehler production was relocated to Greifswald. In autumn 2013 Aurelius acquired the traditional English brand Sealine (motor boats) for HanseYachts from the bankruptcy assets of the former Sealine shipyard in Kidderminster . Sealine yachts have been manufactured and sold in Greifswald since 2014 . In the same year, the production of the Varianta 18 , which began in 2009, was discontinued.

In May 2017 Aurelius acquired the French catamaran manufacturer Privilège Marine SAS , based in Les Sables-d'Olonne . In August 2017, HanseYachts took over the Privilège brand as part of several agreements with the new sister company .

Structure, production and sales

HanseYachts AG produces sailing and motor yachts from 10 to 21 meters in length at its locations in Greifswald and Goleniów . The laminating plant in Goleniów manufactures the body and cover shells and takes on the first steps in assembly. HanseYachts sold 575 boats in the 2018/19 financial year. About 80% of the yachts produced are exported. The Privilège catamarans are produced in Les Sables d'Olonne by the French shipyard Privilège Marine.
