Morales is a small town in eastern Guatemala . It is the administrative seat of the large municipality of the same name ( Municipio ) in the department of Izabal . Around 90,000 people live in the 1,295 km² municipality and around 15,000 in Morales.

geography

Morales is located southeast of Lake Izabal in the valley of the Río Motagua . Between the lake and the river, the foothills of the Sierra de las Minas run in a north-easterly direction , reaching heights of around 600 m here and ending further to the east in the 1,200 m high Montañas del Mico. In the southeast, the Sierra del Merendón forms the border with Honduras . The municipality includes the southeastern part of the Izabal department. It is bordered to the north by Livingston , to the northeast by Puerto Barrios , to the southeast by Honduras, and to the southwest and west by Los Amates . It is divided into 9 villages ( Aldeas ), 36 hamlets ( Caseríos ) and some other smaller districts and places. The town of Morales has grown together with the neighboring town of Bananera in the east for some time. Due to the formerly strong influence of the American United Fruit Company , some villages in the municipality have English names (including York, Dartmouth, Sioux, Nacho Creek). The climate is generally tropical hot.

history

The municipality was officially established on June 24, 1920. The United Fruit Company soon came de facto under neo-colonial rule, setting up its headquarters here and acquiring enormous land on very favorable terms in order to grow bananas. In the 1950s, President Jacobo Arbenz tried to distribute unused UFC land to smallholders in exchange for compensation and to enforce appropriate working conditions on the UFC plantations. At the instigation of the UFC, the Guatemalan government in Washington, DC was accused of communist overthrow efforts, which eventually led to a military intervention by the USA ( Operation PBSUCCESS ). On the other hand, the UFC earned services to improve the local infrastructure.

Economy and Transport

Morales is located on the CA 9 ( Carretera Interoceanica ), which leads from Puerto Barrios on the Caribbean coast via Guatemala City to Puerto San José on the Pacific. A few kilometers northeast of Morales, the CA 13 road branches off to Petén at La Ruidosa . A currently unused railway line runs alongside CA 9, which is why Morales also has a disused station . The city benefits from through traffic and also somewhat from the nearby tourist destinations on Lake Izabal. In addition to bananas, agricultural products also include beans and maize, as well as various other types of fruit and vegetables. The service sector plays an important role.
