The Paris Mormon Temple is the first temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in France . It is located in Le Chesnay-Rocquencourt (Le Chesnay district) in the Yvelines department near Versailles . Its catchment area is the Paris area and large parts of France.

history

There has been a small Mormon congregation in France since the second half of the 19th century with around 38,000 believers in 2017. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had to go to temples in Switzerland, Germany, or the Netherlands for important ceremonies UK travel.

The church had been planning to build a temple since 1998 and spent many years looking for a suitable plot of land in the greater Paris area. After lengthy discussions about Mormon beliefs in secular France, the mayor of Chesnay approved the construction. Thomas S. Monson , President of the Church , announced the planned rebuilding of the temple on July 15, 2011. Ordinarily, temple construction is announced by general conference . As there were reports in the French press beforehand, Thomas S. Monson announced the start of construction three months before the planned general conference.

Construction took place from August 24, 2012 to May 21, 2017. Local building regulations required that the temple should not have a tower. It is one of only four Mormon temples without a tower.

The consecration took place on May 21, 2017 by Henry B. Eyring . With this consecration, the temple became the 156th temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the first in France. In the run-up to the consecration, the temple was open to the public from April 22, 2017 to May 13, 2017. Since the consecration, only members of the Church of Jesus Christ LDS who actively participate in church life and who have received a temple recommendation certificate from their home congregation are allowed to enter the temple . This condition applies to all temples of the Church of Jesus Christ LDS.
