Morro Dois Irmãos , in German Zwei Brüder-Felsen is a rock formation near the Vidigal district in Rio de Janeiro . At 533 meters above sea level, its peak is higher than the Sugar Loaf (395 m), but lower than the Corcovado (704 m). In the park is u. a. a sculpture by Oscar Niemeyer and a memorial to the victims of the Air France AF-447 flight . The Morro Dois Irmãos can be climbed on a 1.5 km long hiking trail.

history

Around the rocks was opened in 1992 with an area of Urban Natural Park Penhasco Dois Irmãos . The surrounding land, which was used as pasture in the 15th and 16th centuries and then converted into sugar cane fields until the 19th century , was urbanized from 1930 onwards, resulting in today's Alto Leblon district . The park has been energetically autonomous since 2011 thanks to the use of modern solar systems .

The park's vegetation consists of a. from endangered species such as orchids : “orquídea-das-pedreiras”, “antúrio-das-pedras” and “velózia-branca” as well as various types of bromeliads . The area is inhabited by black marmosets ( Callithrix penicillata ), skunks (Mephitidae), bats (Microchiroptera) and birds such as the screeching owl ( Asio clamator ), buzzard ( Buteo magnirostris ) and woodpecker ( Colaptes campestris ).
