The Çamlıca Mosque is visible from afar on a hilltop in the Üsküdar district - Çamlıca on the Asian side of the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul . It holds 63,000 worshipers, making it the largest mosque in the country. The actual name for the mosque is still pending. Its construction was controversial because it is seen as part of the Islamization of society. The building includes a museum, an art gallery, a library, a conference hall and an underground car park. It was designed by the architects Bahar Mızrak and Hayriye Gül Totu.

The then Prime Minister and current President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan first mentioned his plan in May 2012; An architecture competition was held and construction began in summer 2013. The building was opened on March 7, 2019, and an official inauguration by the President took place on May 3. The mosque has six  minarets , four of them 107.1 meters high, the other two 90 meters. The costs are estimated at the equivalent of 70 million euros.

The height of the minarets of 107.1 meters is said to refer to the year 1071 and the victory of the Seljuks in the Battle of Manzikert . The main dome is 72 meters high; the diameter of the second dome is 34 meters.

In the public perception, the project ranks alongside major construction projects from the Erdogan era such as the presidential palace , the major airport , the high-speed line to Ankara , the Akkuyu nuclear power plant , the Third Bosphorus Bridge , the planned Istanbul Canal and the railway tunnel under the Bosphorus . Supporters of the mosque point to the population explosion in the city, which also necessitates new mosques; Critics point to the lack of opportunities for citizens to participate and speak of an “imperial psychology”.
