The Moses Mendelssohn Foundation is a non-profit foundation based in Erlangen .

Origin and fields of activity

The Moses Mendelssohn Foundation, in the tradition of the "Moses Mendelssohn Foundation for the Promotion of the Humanities" founded in 1929, was reactivated as a family foundation in 2001 by Julius H. Schoeps and promotes education, upbringing, science and research in the field of German-Jewish as well as European-Jewish history and culture. His brother, the real estate entrepreneur Manfred Schoeps, has brought 30 million euros from his Frankonia real estate group into the Moses Mendelssohn Foundation. It is named after the Berlin enlightenment philosopher Moses Mendelssohn , who was an ancestor of the Schoeps brothers. The foundation endeavors to stimulate new developments in science and culture in the interests of the common good and to enable creativity and engagement in various social fields.

The foundation is active in the following fields: 

A special focus is on the promotion of projects of the Moses Mendelssohn Center in Potsdam, the Moses Mendelssohn Academy in Potsdam and the Berend Lehmann Museum in Halberstadt. In addition, exhibitions at home and abroad, which are conceived for the purpose of popularly implementing scientific findings in the field of European-Jewish studies, are also funded.
