Moshe Shapiro (born October 1944 , † December 3, 2013 in Rechovot ) was an Israeli theoretical chemist.

Life

Shapiro was born in Israel. He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , where he did his doctorate with Raphael D. Levine with a thesis on theoretical chemistry. From 1970 to 1972 he was a postdoc at Harvard University with the later Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, Martin Karplus , where he worked in the field of chemical reaction dynamics. In 1972 he moved to the Weizmann Institute for Science in Rechovot. There he became a professor of chemical physics. Since 2002 he has also held a chair in the Chemistry Department at the University of British Columbia .

He published his internationally most acclaimed work with Paul Brumer from the University of Toronto on the theory of controlling chemical reactions with lasers, also known as quantum control of chemical reactions. In addition to the pioneering work on the coherent control of chemical reactions, he published numerous other works on laser chemistry, quantum computing, spectroscopy of transition states, quantum mechanics and other areas.

In 2004 Shapiro became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . Among other awards, he received the Willis E. Lamb Award for Laser Science and Quantum Optics in 2007, the Canadian Society of Chemistry's John C. Polanyi Award in 2011 and the Israel Chemical Society Award in 2001.
