The Moscow Cathedral Mosque ( Russian Московская соборная мечеть Moskowskaja sobornaja Metschet ) is the main mosque ( Friday mosque ) in Russia's capital Moscow . It was founded in 1904, the current structure was built between 2007 and 2015. The first imam is Rawil Ismagilowitsch Gainutdin , President of the Russian Muftirate and the Spiritual Administration of the Muslims of the Russian Federation (DUM RF) , which is based in the mosque.

The first Moscow cathedral mosque was built in 1904 with the funds of the wealthy Tatar merchant Salih Ersin. It was the main mosque in Moscow throughout the Soviet period. Between 1964 and 1994 Risautdin Salachetdinowitsch Basyrov acted as Imam and Khatīb of the mosque.

The new building, which is around 20 times larger, was built from 2007, the previous building was demolished in 2011. The opening of the new building took place on September 23, 2015 in the presence of the Russian President Vladimir Putin , the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas .

With a capacity of up to 10,000 people and a total area of ​​19,000 square meters (including secondary uses such as a hotel and library), the Moscow Cathedral Mosque is the largest mosque in Russia and the second largest in Europe. Its gilded main dome reaches a height of 46 meters and is gilded on the outside and inscribed with quotes from the Koran on the inside. The construction costs amounted to the equivalent of 170 million euros. The main donor for the new building was the oligarch Suleiman Kerimow , while Turkey donated carpets and candlesticks.
