Mostviertler Sonnwendkreis

The Mostviertel Sonnwendkreis is located in Steinakirchen am Forst in the Mostviertel in Lower Austria on a southern slope of the Haberg. In addition to tourism aspects, ecological goals were also pursued in its design (preservation of old regional fruit varieties). The Sonnwendkreis was planted and built in the spring of 2002 and opened on June 21, 2002.

description

The name is derived from the markings of the summer and winter solstices and the two equivalents of the day and night of the sundial installed in the center of the tree circle. The sundial was formed from a 6.5 meter high obelisk and rails from the Ober-Grafendorf – Gresten local railway through the small Erlauftal valley . Twelve seat stones (symbolize the twelve original communities of the present communities Steinakirchen am Forst , Wolfpassing and Wang or the parish Steinakirchen) surround the sundial. In the south of the obelisk, a gift table was set up from a granite boulder.

A tree circle based on Celtic tree circles was planted around the sundial . The tree circle has a diameter of 80 meters. Around the tree circle is a circle of bushes 100 meters in diameter.

Instead of the traditional birth trees in Celtic tree circles Mostviertler solstice circle of 24 was high strain - fruit trees formed which symbolize the 24 hours of the day. Regional varieties worth preserving were used as varieties (e.g. Bartlmaibirne, Rosmarienapfel, Lorenzibirne, Leutschbirne).

Located at the apex of the Haberg (Rudolfshöhe), the Sonnwendkreis offers a view both to the south ( Ötscher ) and to the north ( Waldviertel , Mühlviertel ).

From 2014 to 2017 there was a privately operated observatory in the area of the Sonnwendkreis, which was also opened to the public several times a year. Due to repeated acts of vandalism, it was dismantled in mid-2017.

The Sonnwendkreis is run by the village renewal association "Steinakirchen Aktiv" (chairwoman Elisabeth Kellnreiter). Traditional events are organized several times a year (solstice fire, pumpkin seed and plum spot at the equinox in autumn, New Year's Eve path).
