Motilin is a gastrointestinal peptide hormone that is produced in the M cells of the small intestine (the number of which decreases from duodenum to ileum ) and is released together with ghrelin . The peptide consists of 22 amino acids .

function

By docking to the motilin receptor (in the mucosa , myenteric plexus , small intestine - muscles , Purkinje cells ), motilin triggers interdigestive motility in the stomach and intestines . In a Chinese study, gallstone patients had elevated blood motilin levels. Motilin may play a role in the body's response to acupuncture . Nothing is known about its function in Purkinje cells.

regulation

Stimulus for secretion: high fat meals, stomach distension, bile and pH drop in the duodenum . The control of the secretion is also done neuronally and by serotonin .

Certain antibiotics (macrolides) act as agonists on the motilin receptor and thus trigger gastrointestinal disorders.
