Mill Loubens am Dropt, view from the east downstream

The Moulin de Loubens is a water mill on an island in the River Dropt , in the French region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine , immediately above the orographic right tributary of the Ségur . The structure also serves as a bridge , sluice , residential building and for water regulation . In 1825 a second mill with two wheels was added on the left bank of the Dropt. Both mills have been united since 1861 by a bridge-like connecting structure with a gallery.

history

This fortified mill is typical of Aquitaine buildings and is on an important trade route. It dates from the 11th century, during the reign of Wilhelm of Aquitaine .

The old part is shaped like a high tower with a square floor plan and has three water wheels. It was built by the Albret family on the remains of a Roman road bridge. It had belonged to the King of England since 1436 as a result of the Hundred Years War , together with the Bagas fortified mill, which is a little further downstream . At the end of the 15th century, the building became the property of the Saint-Pièrre Abbey in La Réole, five kilometers to the south, and was extensively rebuilt for the first time. The mill has been owned by private individuals since the 16th century. In the early 18th century it was sold by the millers of the Chollet family: the property included the large mill building on the right, northern bank and another permanent outbuilding on the south bank. After 1824 a smaller mill was built there. From 1862 a central building connected the two mills. The mill was shut down in 1914. Spinning wheels were then operated in the building and stone carving work was carried out. In the 19th century, a waterway with a lock chamber was built on the south bank to enable the river to be navigable.

Due to its special building history, the ensemble has a high architectural value. With its series of double-arched arches and the raised gallery, the waterways for evacuation during flooding could be easily overcome. An extensive renovation was last carried out in 1991, and the building has been a listed building since March 2000.
