Moumina Houssein Darar (born June 1, 1990 in Ali Sabieh ) is a Djiboutian police officer. As a lead investigator in an anti-terrorism area, she received the United States Department of State's International Women of Courage Award in 2019 . She also got involved in neighborhood help.

Life

Houssein Darar was born in 1990 and is the oldest of eight siblings, six brothers and two sisters. She grew up as a half-orphan without a father. After graduating, she joined the Djiboutian National Police (DNP) at the age of 23 and soon made a career. Houssein Darar was the first and so far only woman to become a member of an anti-terrorist unit. As a lead investigator, she is responsible for high-level cases. Their efforts have resulted in the conviction or expulsion of numerous al-Shabaab terrorists . After the attack on the La Chaumiere restaurant , she was able to thwart several attempted terrorist attacks in the city of Djibouti in 2014 . Even disguised as a man, she carried out an undercover investigation.

Commitment and honor

Houssein Darar was a successful police officer in the fight against terror. As the first woman in her career, she faced numerous challenges. She had to face many adversities, including threats to her personal safety. Suspicious and illegal immigrants had initially resisted being interrogated by a policewoman. She was insulted by criminals, and children had thrown stones at her in the street just because she was a woman in uniform. Despite the abuse, she persevered and continues to be committed to her entire community.

In 2014 Houssein Darar came up with the idea of ​​starting a neighborhood organization to help children in need and support the local community. Together with friends, she founded a non-profit organization that provides clothes and books to children from poor households. Twenty families received help with the purchase of solar panels or a grant for funeral expenses.

On March 7, 2019, Moumina Houssein Darar became the first Djiboutian woman to receive the “International Women of Courage Award”. Among the ten winners of the year were women from Bangladesh , Peru and Montenegro . The award was presented to them by Melania Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo .
