Mount Coates is a 1280 m high mountain in the East Antarctic Mac Robertson Land . In the David Range of the Framnes Mountains it rises immediately south of Mount Lawrence .
Participants of the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE, 1929-1931) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson discovered the mountain in February 1931. Mawson named it after the New Zealand politician Joseph Gordon Coates (1878-1943), Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1925 to 1928.
