The Mount Drygalski is an ice-free and 210 m high hill near the north-western end of the island Heard in the southern Indian Ocean . It rises 1.1 km southeast of Atlas Cove .
Lieutenant Washington Irving Chambers (1856–1934), later a pioneer in the development of catapult launches on aircraft carriers, mapped him on a trip with the USS Marion to Heard Island in January 1882. It is named after the German polar explorer Erich von Drygalski (1865–1949) , who was part of the Gauss expedition he led (1901-1903) in 1902, which explored the area between this hill and Rogers Head after a landing .
