Mount Gilead is a village in Morrow County , Ohio , United States . The place, which has 3290 inhabitants according to the 2000 census , is the county seat of Morrow County.
history
After the first white settlers came to the region in 1817, the place, which was then still in Marion County , was initially referred to as Whetsom and Youngstown . Known as Mount Gilead from 1832, the site was officially registered as a parish in 1839. In 1848, Mount Gilead was designated the administrative seat of the newly formed Morrow County, then with about 400 residents.
In the mid-19th century, some residents who rejected slavery for mostly religious reasons were engaged in the Underground Railroad . By 1880 Mount Gilead had a population of 1,216. In 1919, the site of the US government was a victory column donated to commemorate the fact that in Morrow County during the First World War in relation to per capita income more war bonds were purchased than in any other county in the United States.
Due to the corresponding character of Morrow County, agriculture remained the most important industry in Mount Gilead, which was the most densely populated place in the county at the turn of the millennium.
