The Mount Gordon Mine is a copper mine in northwest Queensland in Australia , about 120 kilometers north of Mount Isa . There are two copper oxide ore bodies in the mine area , the Mammoth and Esperanza deposits. The Mount Gordon Mine operates Aditya Birla Minerals , a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hindalco Industries in India .

history

The copper oxide deposits were discovered in the Mount Oxide area in 1882 and the Mammoth deposit in 1927, which was mined on a small scale until 1967. The mining company VAM Ltd. , Consolidated Gold Fields and Adelaide Brighton built copper from 1969 to from the 1995th Aberfoyle acquired the mine in 1995 and explored the Esperanza deposit before acquiring Western Metals in 1998. The underground mining of the Mammoth deposit was put back into operation in 2002. Birla bought the mine in October 2003 for AUD 21 million from Western Metals.

Birla activities

The Mount Gordon Mine consists of two underground mines. It is an underground mine with a concentrator and a capacity of 1.5 million tons of ore per year. The mine produces around 20,000 tons of copper concentrate annually. The development of the Esperanza-South underground mine ended in 2008 when the price of copper fell significantly. In mid-2010 it was announced that the development would continue.

According to Birla, the Mount Gordon Mine has an annual capacity of 60,000 tons of copper. In December 2011 Birla announced that the production targets could not be achieved and that the Mount Gordon Mine would only produce around 11,000 to 14,000 tons of copper concentrate.

In October 2011, Birla was sentenced to a $ 140,000 fine in court for failing to comply with water pollution regulations at the Mount Gordon Mine operations .

Birla also operates the Nifty Mine in Western Australia and plans to smelt one fifth of the copper concentrate in India.
