The Nifty Mine is a copper mine in the Great Sandy Desert in the eastern Pilbara in Western Australia , Australia . The underground mine is located approximately 350 kilometers east of Port Hedland and 1,250 kilometers north of Perth . The operator is Aditya Birla Minerals , a 100 percent subsidiary of the Indian Hindalco Industries .

Birla acquired the mine in October 2003 for AUD 21 million from Western Metals . The copper mineral chalcopyrite is mined in the Nifty sulphide deposit. The ore from the underground mine, which is located north of the mine , is processed into copper concentrate on the mine site and transported to Port Hedland by truck. There it is temporarily stored in a storage facility owned by the Aditya Group or loaded directly onto ships and shipped to India for smelting . The underground mining can be operated for another nine years with the existing capacity.

In the open pit of the Nifty Mine , oxides are mined , processed by leaching and processed with the copper anode process. Approximately 40,000 tons of copper are produced annually.

Copper production at the Nifty Mine decreased to 11,617 tons in the last quarter of 2012, down from 15,077 tons in the same period last year. This is explained by Aditya with the poor cargo capacity and the technical conditions in the secondary and tertiary tunnels .

The Telfer copper mine is about 70 kilometers away.
