The mountain was first captured in aerial photographs taken as part of Operation Highjump between 1946 and 1947. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the mountain in 1960 after Ensign Maxwell Albert Lopez (1926-1946), who in the course of Operation Highjump on December 30, 1946 when the flying boat George 1 of the type Martin PBM Mariner crashed on the Noville Peninsula in the north Thurston Island was killed.
