The Mount Martin is a 1863 m high stratovolcano of the Aleutian Range on the Alaska Peninsula . He belongs to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes .
Although the eruption of 1953 is controversial and there are no other reports of historical eruptions, sulfur-containing volcanic exhalations in the form of fumaroles can be detected today. The rim of the 300 m wide crater of Mount Martin has collapsed in the southeast. Due to the geothermal activity , the crater is not covered by ice and snow all year round. In the meantime, an acidic crater lake forms again and again .
The volcano was named after George C. Martin, who was the first to visit the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes after the Novarupta eruption in 1912 .
