The United States Geological Survey mapped it on the basis of its own measurements and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1969 after Lieutenant Commander Jack Owen Moriarty (1933–2000), air operations officer on the McMurdo- Station in the Antarctic winter of 1966.
