Mount Russell is a 3557 m high mountain in the Alaska Range in Alaska (USA). The mountain was named by AH Brooks of the US Geological Survey (USGS) in 1902 after Israel Cook Russell (1852-1906), a geologist, researcher and author.
geography
The mountain is located in the west-central section of the Alaska range, almost 54 km southwest of Denali . The mountain marks the southwest corner of the Wilderness Area within Denali National Park . The northwest flank of Mount Russell is drained towards the Chedotlothna Glacier . Below the southeast flank is the nutrient area of the Dall Glacier . Below the northeast ridge, the ice flows directly to the Yentna Glacier . The dominance of Mount Russell is formed by Voyager Peak , 22.55 km northeast , a secondary peak of Mount Foraker . A 1890 m high altitude pass between Chedotlothna- and Yentna glacier is the lowest notch to the north-eastern massif of Mount Foraker.
Ascent history
The first ascent of Mount Russell was achieved in 1962 by a German-American expedition led by Hellmut Raithel. On May 28, 1962, Klaus Ekkerlein, Robert Goodwin and Peter Hennig reached the summit. The ascent route led from the Chedotlothna glacier over the southwest ridge to the summit.
