Mount Smithson is a 3000 m high mountain in the Ross Dependency of Antarctica . It rises on the northern elevation of the Prince Olav Mountains and 5 km east of Mount Sellery between the head ends of the Krout and Harwell glaciers .
The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1966 after the British mineralogist and chemist James Smithson (1765–1829), whose bequest the US government used in 1835 to found the Smithsonian Institution .
