Mount Southard is an isolated and 2400 m high mountain in East Antarctic Victoria Land . It rises 8 km northwest of Welcome Mountain at the northwest end of the group of Outback Nunatakkers .
The United States Geological Survey mapped it based on its own measurements and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1959 to 1964. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1970 after Rupert Barron Southard Jr. (1923-1999), head of the Office for International Duties of the United States Geological Survey, whose topographical department he later headed.
