The Mount Tibrogargan is one of the twelve mountains in the Glass House Mountains National Park north-west of Brisbane in Queensland , Australia . The mountain is made of rhyolite , a volcanite that flowed out of a chimney 27 million years ago, solidified and formed part of a volcano.

Description and name

The Mount Tibrogargan located in the southeast of Queensland . It's easily recognizable because it resembles a gorilla or a stooped old man. In 2004, parts of the rock that resembled an eye fell apart.

The name of the mountain Tibrogargan comes from the language of the Aborigines of the Undanbi chibur for flying squirrel and kaiyathin for biting .

Dream time

In the Aboriginal dream time of the region, Tibrogargan is the father of all the mountains in the Glass House Mountains , except for his wife, Mount Beerwah . They believe that Tibrogargan saw a flood come out of the sea and that he called to his son, Mount Coonowrin : Take your mother, Beerwah, to a safe place. Coonowrin did not succeed and the angry Tibrogargan hit Coonowrin with the club and broke his neck.

tourism

Mount Tibrogargan is the second steepest of the Glass House Mountains after Mount Coonowrin and is also relatively high at 364 m, although it is still 200 m lower than Mount Beerwah , the highest of this mountain group. It is a popular destination for bush walkers, mountaineers and tourists. The latter group often falls victim to their inexperience and poor planning when climbing the mountain and must be rescued by rescue workers and helicopters.

There are less dangerous hiking trails around Mount Tibrogargan , such as the Tibrogargan Circuit at 3.3 km and the Trachyte Circuit at 5.6 km. All trails can be started from the parking lot at the base of Mount Tibrogargan , including the summit climb.
