The United States Geological Survey mapped it on the basis of its own measurements and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1960 to 1963. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1970 after the German-American rocket engineer Wernher von Braun of NASA , who was a visitor to the McMurdo station between 1966 and 1967 .
