Mourning Dawn is a dark metal band founded in 2002 .

history

Laurent "Pokemonslaugther" Chaulet started Mourning Dawn in 2002 as a solo project. At that time, Chaulet was still living with his parents in the southern French provinces and was anxious to “create dark stuff” which, according to his own account, he did not find in the music he heard at the time. Since Chaulet lived in a small town with no metal scene, he made and produced the music without the support of other musicians, companies or producers. During this time he was nicknamed “Pokemonslaugther” after he opposed the Pokémon music played by his brother in his room , Sepultura and Napalm Death from his room at high volume.

After two demos , one self-titled in 2002 and Straight to the Past in 2003, Chaulet was able to secure an initial contract for the project. In 2003 the EP The Freezing Hand of Reason was released by the French death-doom label Ostra Records . Between 2003 and 2007, around 2005, Chaulet moved to France to study; there he gathered a first band line-up. The group rehearsed together and made their first appearances in Paris. Despite the band structure, Chaulet remained the defining figure of the group. According to his own statements, he composes the music and then works it out together with the other musicians in the rehearsal room. Chaulet insists on the last word. Accordingly, Chaulet is considered the only constant member of the group.

After the group had gained popularity in the underground with The Freezing Hand of Reason , the first self-titled album was released in April 2007 on the Israeli doom metal label Totalrust Music . Mourning Dawn was well received internationally. In 2009 the album was re-released as an LP by the German labels Obscure Abhorrence Productions and Art Of Propaganda . In the meantime, Mourning Dawn had recorded her second studio album For the Fallen… . This was again released on CD via Totalrust Music. The production as LP was done this time by the British label Aesthetic Death Records . The concept album For the Fallen… , which thematizes the First World War , was judged to be rather mediocre, and sometimes declared as boring . The third album Les Sacrifiés was only released in 2014. Chaulet blamed a conflict over royalties and unfulfilled promises of the Totalrust Music label for the long wait. The album was completed much earlier, but the release was withheld due to the contract disputes of Mourning Dawn. The double album Les Sacrifiés was released again as a CD via Totalrust Music, this time as an LP via the Chinese label Pest Productions . The album was highly praised internationally, the website Metalstorm.net even named it Best Extreme Doom Metal Album 2014 .

With Waste , Chaulet wrote a concept EP that consists of two songs that overlap to form a third song. Each of the three songs should sound interesting and complete on their own. The EP was released on Aesthetic Death Records and received many positive reviews. Following the release, the band toured Asia and Europe.

style

Mourning Dawn's music is often compared to that of depressive black metal performers such as Shining , Silencer and Forgotten Tomb, as well as Bethlehem and Deinonychus , which are important for dark metal . In many reviews the music is called Depressive Black Metal, Dark Metal or Black Doom , despite the lack of satanic content. Chaulet, however, differentiates Mourning Dawn from Depressive Black Metal. He emphasizes that he has no relationship with the representatives of the genre, but he stated that he wrote music with the aim of sounding as dark and depressing as possible. The music is considered a “mixture of Dark, Doom and Black Metal ” with a depressive and sick mood.

“Desperate but easily understandable screams are only occasionally interrupted by evocative chants, hopeless screams or the crying of a woman, while the guitars, which are practically continuously played at the slow death march pace, give way to gloomy, clearly played passages or bleak lead melodies. Accordingly, the drumming is slowed down at MOURNING DAWN. The minutes in which the double bass is used can be counted on one hand despite the extreme metal reference. "
