The Moutarderie de Luxembourg is the largest Luxembourgish mustard factory . Today it is located in Munsbach in the municipality of Schüttringen . The factory is operated by Moutarderie de Luxembourg sàrl , the largest Luxembourg mustard and mayonnaise manufacturer .

history

The Mustard production in Luxembourg began in 1922 in the in Pfaffenthal located Mohrenfels mill , one of the oldest mills in the city of Luxembourg. Here mustard seeds were ground and made into mustard with pepper , curry , salt , coriander and vinegar . In 1976 the Munhowen family, which had been running a beverage trade (" Etablissements Munhowen ") since 1908 and had been producing mustard under the "Moutarde Royale" brand since the 1950s, took over the business.

The Mohrfelsmühle was closed in 1986 and new production facilities were built in Howald .

In 2000, Roland Munhowen took over the "Moutarderie de Luxembourg". Today he runs the business together with his son Yann. The company has eight employees. The head of production is Wolfgang Zeimentz and Jean Franck,.

In 2008 the moutarderie moved to a new building in Munsbach.

Products

For a long time, the Moutarderie produced only one product, the “Moutarde de Luxembourg”, a classic mustard made from an Alsatian recipe. Today, after various attempts at product diversification, the mustard factory produces three different types of mustard and three types of mayonnaise. The mustard product range now includes the classic "Moutarde de Luxembourg", spicy "Moutarde forte" (since 1987) and grainy mustard "Moutarde à l'ancienne".

Mayonnaise production began in 1991 with an egg and lemon mayonnaise. In 1998 a “mayonnaise à l'ancienne” was added.

Most of the production is in the "Moutarde de Luxembourg", of which around 220 tons are produced per year. Mayonnaise production is around 40 tons per year.

Ketchup and Andalouse sauce have also been in the range since 2015 .

Business figures

In 2003 the “Moutarderie de Luxembourg” achieved a turnover of 753,000 euros. Of this, 628,000 were mustard and 125,000 were mayonnaise. With its products, the company has a market share of around 70% in Luxembourg. It recently had its first local competitor in Ourdall mustard . The main competitor for the mayonnaise sector is Calvé .
