MFRD

The Moyen de Forage Rapide de Destruction - MFRD (German: Sprengschachtbohrgerät ) is a device for the production of explosive shafts for the destruction of bridges or the like, or for the production of obstacles. The manufacturer was the Société Constructions Industrielles d'Anjou . The device is mounted on the 4x4 RTC10 truck from the former Pinguely company in Lyon .

history

The MFRD has been used by the pioneers of the French army since 1981 . 122 devices were originally ordered, 25 of which were still in use in 2005 and only a few in 2016. As early as 2012, the devices were no longer part of the main equipment of the pioneers and are on the extinction budget. Several copies were used by the Romanian army in 2000/2010.

The blocking trains in the engineer regiments are equipped with the corresponding companies . A group consists of four MFRD and four Renault TRM 10000 with a hydraulic system on each trailer.

Possible uses

The vehicle is designed to create obstacles as quickly as possible in order to at least slow down any further advance of the enemy. This includes destroying roads, railway lines and bridges as well as causing embankments or slopes to slide off. For this purpose a shaft is drilled, loaded with explosives and made to explode.

Characteristics

The crew consists of the driver and the operator.

The device has a foldable mast with an auger and a compressor for operating a pneumatic hammer .

The equipment can be set up by the crew in 10 minutes.

The earth auger with a diameter of 22 cm penetrates six meters deep into normal, natural soil in 7 minutes. It takes up to 30 minutes to do this on hard ground. The drill hole angle can deviate from the vertical by up to 15 °.

The explosive charge F1 consists of four cylinders A-IX-2 of 12.5 kg hexolite aluminum explosive, 8 m detonating cord and an electric blasting machine; The explosive charge F1 A consists of four cylinders A-IX-2 of 13 kg Hexal explosive, 20 m detonating cord, an electric blasting machine and three detonators.

In normal terrain, a device can produce an explosive funnel with a diameter of six to eight meters, the effectiveness of stopping such a battle tank is between 40% and 60%. If a group with three vehicles is used, there is an obstacle measuring 18 × 6 meters.
