Mr. Shi and the song of the cicadas (Original title: A Thousand Years of Good Prayers ) is an American film from 2007 by Wayne Wang . The film is based on a short story by Yiyun Li .

action

The Chinese Shi visits his daughter Yilan in her new home, the USA, after a twelve-year separation. The newly divorced daughter initially refuses the father's efforts to make her happy. Only through contact with an old Iranian woman, with whom he had long conversations in the park, did Mr. Shi learn that he had to use a different, honest language in order to reach his daughter.

criticism

“A melancholy tragic comedy in static images about a speechlessness that is due to the emotional distance. The background film gives food for thought and is carried by a fabulous leading actor. "

"Touching and yet politely distant, Wayne Wang tells of alienation, family communication and white lies - and thus proves himself to be a master of the small form, far removed from the glamor of his Hollywood films" Another Holiday "and" Manhattan Love Story "."

Awards

In 2007 the film won awards for Best Actor and Best Picture at the San Sebastián International Film Festival .
