Lake Mugesera is an inland lake in eastern Rwanda . It is located in the Eastern Province , about 40 kilometers southeast of the capital Kigali and about 20 kilometers southwest of the city of Rwamagana . Mugesera Lake belongs to the Gisaka Lake Group in southeastern Rwanda, near the border with Burundi . Lake Mugesera is the largest lake in this group, which also includes Lake Birara to the west and Lake Sake to the south .
The lake extends over a length of about 14 kilometers from northwest to southeast. At its northern end, a bay more than 10 kilometers long and less than a kilometer wide extends in an easterly direction to behind the town of Mabare . Three rivers flow into this bay, the Nyirabidibili , the Rwangunda and the Mwambu . The Ruvomo flows into the lake a little west of the bay . The Nyabarongo , with which the lake is connected by a swamp , flows past its north-western bank about 2 kilometers away .
