Neckera complanata ( Smooth Neckermoos ) is a deciduous moss species that is quite common in Central Europe, and forms conspicuous, shiny lawns that often hang down on rocks.
description
The plants form extensive, shiny, light green coatings on the substrate. As a rule, they grow on vertical substrates, and the shoot tips are horizontal and are often stepped like a staircase. The up to 15 cm long, often more or less regularly pinnate stems often form flagella in the form of elongated, thin branches with reduced, scale-shaped leaves. Often so many flagella are formed that the entire lawn appears to be flagella.
The leaves are not wavy. They are ovate to tongue-shaped and have a short pointed tip, the tip of the leaf is occasionally serrated. The cells of the leaf blade are prosenchymatic , but shortened and rhombic towards the tip. A vein is missing or short and double.
The capsules are raised above the moss lawn.
Distribution and location requirements
The species grows mainly on calcareous rocks, more rarely on calcareous rocks or on bark.
It occurs in the temperate latitudes of the northern hemisphere. In Central Europe it is widespread in the low mountain ranges and the Alps , especially in limestone areas. It is less common in the plains.
