The Neckeraceae are a family of mosses .
description
It is pleurocarpic moss. The special characteristic of the mosses of this family within the order is the position of the leaflets. Although these have grown spirally on the stem, they are twisted so that the leaf surfaces are all in one plane. This creates what appears to be two-line, flat foliage. Due to this growth form, the individual leaves are often asymmetrical.
A vein may or may not be present. There is rarely a double rib. In any case, the rib stops well before the tip of the leaf. The cells of the leaf surface are oval (short to elongated) and always smooth, i.e. not papilose . The leaf wing cells are not particularly differentiated.
The upright capsule is oval to oblong oval. The peristome consists of two rows of teeth and a total of 16 teeth, the inner row of peristomes often being shorter than the outer row, sometimes even almost entirely reduced. The kalyptra is asymmetrical in the shape of a cap.
Most species of the family form extensive, branched, and often very shiny lawns. Many species reproduce vegetatively through the formation of flagella .
Distribution and location requirements
The Neckeraceae are distributed worldwide in the tropics and in the temperate regions. They usually grow on bark or on stone.
Genera and species
The Neckeraceae are placed in the order Hypnales . The family consists of 31 genera with around 335 species. The following three occur in Europe :
